S-89.2300 Sound and Voice Technology (5 cr), Autumn 2007 - Reading Guide
"Everything you ever wanted to know about sound"

Instructions for preparing for examination (academic year 2007-2008)

Both the course book as well as the exercise material is required for the examination. The whole course book is required, under the following conditions:

  • Only general level knowledge of percussion and keyboard instruments is required (chapters 13-14)
  • Basics of electronics are not required allthough they are probably already known (chapter 18)
  • Basic digital and computer technology (chapter 21) is probably already known. If not, it is a good idea to rehearse
  • The history and analog devices of electronic music (chapters 26-27) are not required
  • The fundamentals of digital signal processing (cahpter 28) are probably known beforehand. If not, it is a good idea to rehearse
  • Only general level knowledge of synthesis methods is needed, otherwise chapter 29 is required.

Exercise material should be studied and understood well. Please note that the exercises are fairly simple and focus on certain topics and acoustical phenomena, whereas in the examination understanding and ability to apply calculations and formulas are needed. Therefore, the calculations in the examination will be more challenging that the ones in the exercise material.

In a typical exam, you need to answer five (5) questions out of six (6). The questions are of various types: essays, concepts/terminology, problems, multiple choice etc. However, there are no guarantees that every exam will follow this structure.

The course personnel does not provide earlier exams.

It is absolutely vital to start preparing for the examination in time. There's quite a lot of material to study!
