The seminar is devoted to changing current topics in audio signal processing. In fall 2008, the title of
the seminar will be Sonic Interaction Design. We will look at the usage of sound, more
specifically, of non-speech audio at the interfaces of interactive commodities that support continuos
interaction and multi-sensory feedback. Invited experts will provide us up-to-date information for
designing sonic interactions. In classes, the participants will turn this information into embodied aural
experience: they will ideate, prototype, evaluate, and reflect on sounding artifacts. They will also
prepare a manuscript on a given topic and present it akin to the experts' presentations. The language of
the seminar is English.
TopicsA tentative list of topics is as follows:
PrerequisitesThe basics of acoustics and digital signal processing, such as the courses S-89.2300 Sound and Voice Technology (that replaces S-89.300) and T-61.3010 Digital Signal Processing and Filtering, or their equivalents. EnrollmentPlease register to this course using WebOodi. LiteratureParts of textbooks. Papers from journals, conferences, and workshops.
RequirementsYou can choose either "S-89.3580 Audio Signal Processing Seminar" (3 cr) or "S-89.4820
Postgraduate Course in Audio Signal Processing" (8 cr). There are differences in requirements and the amount of work
between the two courses.
The seminar (S-89.3580) is targeted for students working for the
Master's degree in acoustics, audio signal processing, or digital
signal processing. The requirements are attendance, learning
diaries, seminar paper, seminar presentation, and peer
feedback. The Postgraduate Course (S-89.4820) is for people with a
Master's degree. On top of the seminar requirements, they will
carry out a special assignment and report.
Teams, Participants, Topics, and Student Presentation ScheduleThe students will discuss the seminar topics and plan the contents and coverage of their papers and presentations in small teams. However, within the team, each student will write his/her seminar paper and presentation slides individually. For each team, a team leader will return the draft versions of the deliverables (papers and presentation slides) of his/her team and compile the team member's presentation slides into a single slideshow. All the student presentations will be done on a fixed seminar day, on 03.12.2008.
