Biography

Vesa Välimäki was born in Kuorevesi, Finland, in 1968. He received the degrees of Master of Science in Technology (1992), Licentiate of Science in Technology (1994), and Doctor of Science in Technology (1995), all in electrical engineering, from the Helsinki University of Technology (TKK), Espoo, Finland. His doctoral thesis dealt with fractional delay filters and discrete-time simulation of acoustic tubes for sound synthesis.

In 1996, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Westminster, London, UK, where he was developing digital signal processing algorithms that employ nonuniform sampling. He held the position of Senior Assistant (cf. Assistant Professor) in acoustics and audio signal processing at TKK from 1996 until 2001. From 1998 until 2001 he was on leave as a Postdoctoral Researcher under a grant from the Academy of Finland. From 1999 until 2002, he was a Docent (cf. Adjunct Professor) in audio signal processing at TKK. He was Professor of signal processing at the Pori School of Technology and Economics, Tampere University of Technology, Pori, Finland, for the academic year 2001-2002. Since 2002 he has been Professor of audio signal processing at the Aalto University, Espoo, Finland. In 2003, he was appointed Docent in signal processing at the Pori School of Technology and Economics, Tampere University of Technology. During the academic year 2008-2009 he was on leave as a Senior Researcher under a grant from the Academy of Finland and spent part of the year as a Visiting Scholar at the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA), Stanford University, CA. Since January 2017, he has been the Vice Dean for Research in the Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering. His research interests are in digital processing of audio and musical signals. He is the author or co-author of more than 390 scientific or technical papers and is responsible for four patents.

Prof. Välimäki is a Fellow of the Audio Engineering Society, a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE Signal Processing Society), and a Life Member of the Acoustical Society of Finland. He was the secretary of the IEEE Finland Section in 2000-2001, and was the President of the Finnish Musicological Society in 2003-2004. He has served as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Signal Processing Letters (2005-2009) and the IEEE Transactions on Audio, Speech and Language Processing (2007-2011). He was an Editorial Board Member of the Research Letters in Signal Processing (2007-2009), the Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering (2010-2013), and The Scientific World Journal (in signal processing) (2012–2016). Currently, he is a Senior Area Editor of the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Audio, Speech and Language Processing. He was a member of the Audio and Acoustic Signal Processing Technical Committee of the IEEE Signal Processing Society in 2007-2013 and is currently an associate member. He was the Lead Guest Editor of the special issue of the EURASIP Journal on Applied Signal Processing on “Model-based sound synthesis” (July 2004), of the special issue of the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine on “Signal processing for sound synthesis” (March 2007), and of the special issue of the IEEE Transactions on Audio, Speech and Language Processing on “Virtual analog audio effects and musical instruments” (May 2010). He was a Guest Editor of the special issue of the EURASIP Journal on Advances in Signal Processing on “Musical applications of real-time signal processing” (2011) and the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine special issue on “Signal Processing Techniques for Assisted Listening” (2015). He was the sole Guest Editor of the Applied Sciences special issue on “Audio Signal Processing” (2015-2016) and is currently a Guest Editor of the the Applied Sciences special issue on "Sound and Music Computing". He was the Chair of the 11th International Conference on Digital Audio Effects DAFx-08, which was held in Espoo, Finland, in September 2008. He is the Chair of the 14th International Sound and Music Computing Conference SMC-17, which will be held in Espoo, Finland, in July 2017.
